Civil Rights Case Handled by Piccuta Law Group Makes Front Page News
On June 12, 2016, a Federal Civil Rights case handled by the Piccuta Law Group made front page news of the Fresno Bee Newspaper. The article reported on the high-profile case of George Michael Macias, Jr. v. City of Clovis, Et Al. The civil rights case is pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California and involves claims for excessive force and police brutality.
The Piccuta Law Group represents the Plaintiff George Michael Macias, Jr. who was savagely beaten by four City of Clovis police officers and tasered while in handcuffs in September 2012. The article focused on a particular issue in the case. That issue was whether or not the Court would grant a request by the Piccuta Law Group to unseal judicial filings and make public Internal Affairs Investigations regarding one of the officers involved in the case.
The Defendant City of Clovis has aggressively objected to the release of these confidential Internal Affairs Investigations. The Piccuta Law Group has argued that the documents should not be confidential because they are part of judicial filings that are important to the case and that there is a presumption of public access to judicial filings which requires a compelling reason to prevent the public from accessing them. The Court has set the matter for a hearing on June 24, 2016.
