Charles Tony Piccuta Competes in Southern Arizona Triathlon
On October 28, 2017, attorney Charles Tony Piccuta competed in an Olympic distance triathlon in Patagonia, Arizona. Patagonia is located in Southern Arizona southeast of Tucson and approximately 30 miles from the border of Mexico. The race took place in Patagonia Lake State Park and the swim leg was in Patagonia Lake.
The race has been called the toughest triathlon in Arizona. The race is unique because of the small number of competitors. This year, the race only had 31 male participants in the Olympic distance category. The Olympic distance consists of .93 mile swim, 24.8 mile bike and 6.2 mile run.
The race is known for its brutal bike climbs which are on the steep hills leading into Patagonia Lake State Park. The dangerous descents regularly cause cyclists to reach speeds over 40 miles per hour. The run portion is situated on a dirt road that overlooks the park and then drops back down toward the shores of Patagonia Lake.
Piccuta competed in the race with colleague, Mark Anderson, who is an editor at the Monterey County Weekly. Both completed the race in under 3 hours and 20 minutes. This is the second Olympic distance triathlon that Piccuta completed this Fall.
