Piccuta Law Group Reaches $420,000 Settlement With State of California to Resolve Prisoner’s Civil Rights Lawsuits
On July 17, 2017, the Piccuta Law Group reached a tentative settlement with the state of California and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The settlement is in the amount of $420,000 and resolves two civil rights lawsuits filed by prisoner Kevin Bryant against the CDCR. Piccuta had previously obtained a jury verdict in one of the two cases and a motion for attorney fees was pending in that case at the time the settlement was reached.
The settlement resolves the pending motion for attorney fees in the matter of Bryant v. Gallagher as well as a second lawsuit in which Piccuta also represented Bryant. In the second lawsuit, Piccuta alleged that prison officers had retaliated against Bryant for taking legal action against other prison guards. Just prior to the settlement, Piccuta successfully opposed motions for summary judgment in that lawsuit.
